# Flash sales

> Schedule a sale for your whole store or a few products. Buyers see a live countdown, and the price goes back up on its own when it ends.

A flash sale is a discount with a start and an end. While it runs, your
product page and checkout show the sale price next to the struck-through
price, and a countdown to the end: **Launch week · 30% off · Ends in
02:14:33**.

<Note>
  Flash sales are part of the **Growth** plan and above.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the sale">
    Go to **Launch pricing → Flash sales** and click **New flash sale**. Give
    it a name, a discount (a percent from 1 to 90, or an amount off), a start
    and an end. A sale can last up to 90 days.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick what is on sale">
    Your whole store, or only the products you choose. The dialog previews
    what buyers will pay.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Announce it (optional)">
    From the sale's menu, **Announce by email** drafts an email to your
    audience with a button to your store. Nothing is sent until you review it
    and send or schedule it from **Emails**, so your sender, send allowance
    and unsubscribe rules apply as usual.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## How it works

* **On time, by itself.** A sale is live from its start to its end. Prices
  are worked out from the clock every time a buyer opens a page or a
  checkout, so the sale starts and ends on the minute with nothing to switch
  off.
* **The countdown.** The product page and the checkout count down to the
  end. When it reaches zero, the checkout prices the order again at the
  regular price before the buyer can pay.
* **One discount per order.** If several sales are live, or the buyer also
  qualifies for [fair pricing](/selling/fair-pricing) or enters a discount
  code, they get the single best price. Discounts never stack. See
  [how prices are worked out](#how-prices-are-worked-out).
* **Never free, never under 1.00.** A flash sale cannot take a price below
  1.00 in your currency or make an order free (use a 100% discount code for
  that).
* **Early-bird prices.** On a product with [price steps](/selling/early-bird-pricing),
  the sale discount is taken off the early-bird price in effect.
* **Results.** Each sale shows the orders and revenue it brought in. Every
  order records the sale in `pricing.flashSale`.
* **Ending early or deleting.** Edit the end date, or delete the sale. Orders
  already made keep their record.
* **Not on pay what you want or subscriptions.** Buyers pick their own price
  on pay-what-you-want products, and subscription prices are not changed.

## How prices are worked out

Every price is worked out on our server with one rule, the same on the
product page, the checkout, the receipt, the order and the
`order.completed` webhook:

1. **The price in effect:** the lowest of the product's price, the
   early-bird step's price while a step is open, and the buyer's own
   personal-deadline offer.
2. **One discount, the best for the buyer:** among the live flash sales,
   fair pricing for the buyer's country and the code they entered. Ties go
   to the code, then the flash sale, then fair pricing.
3. **Limits:** automatic discounts (flash sales and fair pricing) never go
   under 1.00 or make an order free.
