# Fair pricing by country

> Automatic discounts for buyers in countries where money goes further, with a VPN check so it stays fair.

Fair pricing lowers your price for buyers in countries where the same money
buys more. A buyer in India sees **Prices adjusted for India: 60% off** on
your product page and pays the adjusted price at checkout. Buyers in the
United States, Western Europe and Australia pay your full price.

<Note>
  Fair pricing is part of the **Growth** plan and above.
</Note>

<Steps>
  <Step title="Turn it on">
    Go to **Launch pricing → Fair pricing** and switch it on. Every product
    follows these settings.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the tiers">
    Countries are sorted into four tiers by how far money goes there
    compared with the United States (a purchasing-power index built into
    Pocketsflow). Each tier has its own discount, from 0% to 80%:

    | Tier | Prices compared with the US | Default | For example |
    | - | - | - | - |
    | Tier 1 | 58–72% | 20% off | Spain, Italy, Japan, South Korea |
    | Tier 2 | 45–58% | 35% off | Poland, Brazil, Mexico, Portugal |
    | Tier 3 | 33–45% | 50% off | Romania, Colombia, Kenya, Thailand |
    | Tier 4 | under 33% | 60% off | India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan |
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add exceptions (optional)">
    Set your own discount for any country under **Country exceptions**. `0%`
    means full price there.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Per product (optional)">
    In the product editor, **Checkout** step → **Launch pricing**, choose
    **Store settings**, **Off** (full price everywhere) or **Own percents**
    (the store's countries with this product's own discount per tier).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The VPN check

The buyer's country is never taken from their browser. It is the country of
their internet connection, worked out on our server, and it must agree with
everything else we know before the discount applies:

1. **Their device's time zone.** A VPN changes the connection's country,
   almost never the computer's clock. A connection from India with a clock
   set to New York (or to UTC, which privacy tools report) pays full price.
2. **Their billing country.** If the billing country typed in the payment
   form is another country, the checkout prices the order again at full
   price before they can pay, and says why: *Fair pricing is for buyers
   paying from India.*
3. **After payment.** The billing country the payment collected is compared
   once more. The payment has already happened at that point, so a
   mismatch is not refused: the order is marked
   (`pricing.fairPricing.verified: false`) and counted under **Billing
   mismatches** in the results, so you can follow up or refund.

## How it combines

Only one discount applies to an order: the best of fair pricing, any live
[flash sale](/selling/flash-sales) and the buyer's discount code. On a
product with [early-bird steps](/selling/early-bird-pricing), fair pricing
is taken off the early-bird price. Fair pricing never takes a price below
1.00 and never makes an order free.

## Results

**Launch pricing → Fair pricing → Results** shows the orders that got fair
pricing in the last 30 days, 90 days or 12 months: orders, revenue, the
discount you gave and billing mismatches, by country. Amounts are your
product price in your currency, before tax.

## API

Read and change the settings with `/fair-pricing`, the results with
`/fair-pricing/analytics`, and a product's mode with
`PATCH /products/{id}/fair-pricing`. See
[Launch pricing API](/api-reference/launch-pricing).
