# Exit offers and downsells

> Show a one-time discount when a buyer is about to leave the checkout, and a cheaper option when they remove an add-on.

Two gentle offers that win back buyers who hesitate. Both are set per product,
in the product editor's **Checkout** step.

<Note>
  Exit offers and downsells are part of the **Growth** plan and above.
</Note>

## Exit offer

When a buyer is about to leave the checkout, a small dialog offers a discount
you choose (a percentage or a fixed amount).

* **When it shows.** After the buyer has been on the checkout for at least
  10 seconds and then moves the pointer out through the top of the window
  (toward the tabs). On phones: when they press back, or come back to the
  tab after leaving it idle.
* **Once per visit.** It shows at most once per browser session, and never
  when a discount is already applied.
* **Respectful.** A clear close button, Escape and a click outside all close
  it. Nothing is applied unless the buyer clicks **Apply**.
* **A real discount code.** Turning the offer on creates a discount (for
  example `EXIT10-K7QX2M`) that you'll see in **Discounts**. Its usage is
  counted like any other code. Turning the offer off deactivates it.

## Downsell

When a buyer removes an order bump, the checkout suggests a cheaper product
instead, at the price you set (or the product's own price). The buyer can add
it with one click or dismiss it. It is offered once, and only when it is
cheaper than the add-on they removed.

The downsell is paid in the same payment as the main product and delivered
like an order bump: the buyer gets both products, and it appears on the order
with the other add-ons.

## API

Configure both with `PATCH /products/{id}/exit-offer` (API key). See
[Payment plans and exit offers](/api-reference/checkout-offers).
