# Early-bird price steps

> “First 50 buyers pay $49, then $79.” The price goes up on its own after a number of sales or a date.

Price steps reward the people who buy first. Your product page shows how
many spots are left at the current price and what comes next: **23 of 50
left at $49, then $79**. When the step sells out or its date passes, the
next price applies by itself.

<Note>
  Early-bird price steps are part of the **Growth** plan and above.

  <Step title="Add the steps">
    In the product editor, **Checkout** step → **Launch pricing**, click
    **Add steps** (or use **Launch pricing → Early-bird**). Add up to five
    steps.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set each step">
    Each step has a price below the product's price, and a number of buyers,
    an end date, or both. Prices go up from one step to the next. After the
    last step, buyers pay the product's own price.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Launch">
    The editor previews what buyers see: *First 50 buyers $49, next 100 $59,
    then \$79*. Watch each step fill up on the **Early-bird** tab.
  </Step>

## How it works

* **The price in effect.** The first step that still has spots and has not
  ended is the price. It is the price, not a discount, so the checkout shows
  it as the product's price with an **Early-bird price** line.
* **No overselling.** A spot is taken the moment a buyer starts the checkout
  and held for them for 20 minutes while they pay. Two buyers racing for the
  last spot can never both get it: the second one gets the next price. A
  spot that is not paid within 20 minutes goes back on sale.
* **Late payments are honoured.** A buyer who saw the early-bird price and
  pays after their 20 minutes is still charged that price and counted, so a
  step can end one or two over its limit when payments were already in
  flight. It never sells more than that.
* **One spot per buyer at a time.** Applying a code or adding an order bump
  keeps the buyer's spot instead of taking another.
* **Dates end on time.** A step with an end date closes at that minute, with
  nothing to switch off.
* **Discounts.** A live [flash sale](/selling/flash-sales), [fair
  pricing](/selling/fair-pricing) or a discount code is taken off the
  early-bird price. Only one discount applies.
* **Needs a fixed price.** Steps work on products without variants and not
  on pay what you want.
* **Editing.** Change prices, limits and dates at any time; the counts of
  steps you keep are kept. Turning the steps off goes back to the product's
  price at once.
