# Affiliate tiers

> Affiliates earn more as they sell more, plus one-off bonuses at milestones, so your top affiliates keep promoting.

A flat commission pays your best affiliate the same as someone who made one
sale. **Commission tiers** raise the rate as an affiliate sells more in a
period, and **milestone bonuses** reward them once when they reach a number
of sales.

<Note>
  Affiliate tiers are part of the **Pro** plan and above. They build on your
  [affiliate program](/operations/affiliates).
</Note>

## Set it up

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Commission tiers">
    Go to **Affiliates → ⋯ → Commission tiers** (or **Commission tiers** in the
    sidebar) and turn **Tiered commissions** on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose what counts">
    Sales made **this month**, **this quarter**, **this year** (calendar
    periods, UTC) or **all time**. A new period starts every affiliate's count
    from zero.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Build the ladder">
    Each tier starts at a sale number and has a rate. For example:

    | From sale | Commission | Covers sales |
    | - | - | - |
    | #1 | 20% | 1–10 |
    | #11 | 25% | 11–50 |
    | #51 | 30% | 51+ |

    Before the first tier, the affiliate's own rate applies.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add milestone bonuses (optional)">
    For example **$50 at sale 25** and **$200 at sale 100**. Milestones count
    all-time sales, and each bonus is paid once per affiliate.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## How a sale is priced

The rate is decided when the buyer's checkout is created, from the
affiliate's **paid, non-refunded sales in the period before this sale**. The
11th sale of the month has 10 sales before it, so with the ladder above it
earns 25%. The rate used is saved on the order: a later tier change, a new
period or a refund never re-prices a recorded commission.

* Sales in test mode only count towards test-mode tiers.
* An affiliate with their own commission tiers (set on the affiliate) keeps
  them; your program ladder is for everyone else.
* If you move below Pro, tiers and new milestones stop applying (the
  affiliate's own rate applies again). Bonuses already earned are still paid.

## How bonuses are paid

A bonus is paid like commission, through your regular affiliate payouts —
nothing else changes in how affiliates get paid:

1. It is collected from the sale that reaches the milestone, out of your share
   of that sale (after the platform fee and the commission).
2. If one sale can't cover the whole bonus, the rest comes from the
   affiliate's next sales, one sale at a time, until it's all collected.
3. Each part is paid out with the sale that carried it, after the usual hold.

One checkout at a time can carry a bonus, so a bonus is never collected twice.
Payment plans don't carry bonuses (every payment would collect it again).

## Refunds

Refunds work as they always have: a refunded sale's commission is never paid.

* The part of a bonus a refunded sale carried goes back to the buyer with the
  refund, and is collected again from a later sale.
* If the refunded sale is the one that reached the milestone, the bonus is no
  longer earned. The next sale that reaches the milestone earns it again.
* A sale that was already paid out is never clawed back.

## What affiliates see

In **My Affiliate Dashboard**, each creator running tiers shows the rate the
affiliate's next sale earns, the ladder, how many sales to the next tier and
to the next bonus, when the period resets, and the bonuses they earned.
